Anyone can see a psychologist or engage in therapy without a referral – this is called self-referring. However, should you wish to claim a Medicare rebate for psychology sessions you will need a valid referral from your GP or psychiatrist.

I hold a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) with First Class Honours, and a Master of Psychology (Clinical). I am a registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and hold Clinical Endorsement which allows me to use the title “Clinical Psychologist”. I am also a Board Approved Supervisor for other psychologists.

As you may have found, there is currently a huge burden on the health system and wait times to see a psychiatrist are lengthy. Clinical Psychologists are approved and able to diagnose ADHD.
Undertaking a thorough assessment process with a psychologist not only shortens the wait-time to obtain a diagnosis, but you will also receive a comprehensive report and feedback about your profile; including individually tailored recommendations for treatment, strategies and interventions.

No, psychologists are not able to prescribe medication. Please see your GP to discuss medication, or a psychiatrist if you would like to discuss medication for ADHD.

There are a number of treatment options available for individuals with ADHD. Medication, therapy, ADHD/executive functioning coaching, or a combination of these may be useful for you!
